Macbeth Act 4 Scene 2

A room in Macduff’s castle

This scene has characters Lady Macduff, her son, Rosse, a messanger, and murderers. The scene starts with Lady Macduff and Rosse talking to each other in the castle. Lady Macduff is confused on why he has left her and her children to go to England, and views him as a liar and a traitor for this. Rosse thinks she needs to pull herself together as Macduff is only doing what is right. Since Macduff has left, Lady Macduff sees her children as fatherless. Her son doesn’t believe that he is dead and asks her mother how she will cope if he is dead, which she says that she will just go marry another man. Lady Macduff says her husband and all traitors should be hung by honest men, but her son says ‘Then the liars and swearers are fools, for there are liars and swearers enough to beat the honest men and hang up them’.

A messenger comes in and tells Lady Macduff and her son that harm is coming, meaning the murderers. The murderers enter and ask where Macduff is, but Lady Macduff says he has fled and she doesn’t know. The murderer calls him a traitor. Her son speaks up defending his father, only to be stabbed and die. The scene ends with his mother running from the murderers. We can assume she is dead too.
