Macbeth Act 3 Scene 5

This scene is a short scene consisting of only two characters, First Witch and Hecate. As Hecate starts speaking, we can identify that she is the leader witch and in charge of the other witches. The scene starts off with thunder, which is a feature of the witches, and then the First Witch and the others enter. The First Witch asks Hectare why she looks angry. Hecate says she is angry because she is the leader of them all, yet she was no included in the activities with Macbeth and feels that they disobeyed her. She says – ‘Saucy and overbold, how did you dare to trade and traffic with Macbeth In riddles and affairs of death, and I, the mistress of your charms, the close contriver of all harms, was never called to bear my part, or show the glory of our art?‘ Here, she is saying why did they give Macbeth riddles and prophecies about his future and not let her know. Hecate also asks why they chose Macbeth, as she is just like every other man – spoilt, angry and violent. But now that Hecate is in on the activities with Macbeth, she tells the other witches to get ready, because now she is participating the fun will really begin. Hecate is going to trick him with illusions to make him think he is immortal, which is probably his dream. The first witch says she has to leave, and then that is the end of the scene.
